Seychelles Prison Service commemorating International Nelson Mandela Day

On Friday 18th July 2025, the Seychelles Prison Service held a heartfelt commemoration of International Nelson Mandela Day at the University of Seychelles, under the theme “It is in our hands.”

The event featured a moving series of performances by inmates, including poems, personal testimonies and cultural dances. These powerful presentations reflected their journeys of rehabilitation, highlighted their talents, and celebrated their cultural identity and personal growth.

Attendees also heard speeches from the Commissioner of Prisons and the Minister for Internal Affairs, Mr. Charles Fonseka. Six officers were officially confirmed into their posts, and certificates of appreciation were presented in recognition of dedicated service.

A notable highlight was the presentation of findings from a recidivism research project conducted by UniSey, offering insight into ongoing efforts to reduce re-offending through structured rehabilitation programmes.

The event served as a strong reminder of the human side of incarceration and the importance of providing second chances through support, development, and dignity, values deeply rooted in Nelson Mandela’s legacy.
