Seychelles acquires 14 new buses, first electric models, to enhance public transport

The Ministry of Transport and the Seychelles Public Transport Corporation (SPTC) are pleased to announce that Seychelles has taken another important step in advancing and upgrading its public mobility services.

On 17th September 2025, SPTC signed a contract in India with Ashok Leyland for the procurement of 14 new buses, including 12 Large Capacity Ashok Leyland Viking 210 NAC buses and 2 Switch Mobility EiV9 electric buses. The agreement was signed by the Chairman of SPTC, Mr Andy Moncherry, in the presence of the Chief Executive Officer for SPTC, MrGeffy Zialor, and Head of Technical Engineering, Mr Ryen Samson, following final technical discussions with Ashok Leyland.

The contract, valued at USD 926,400, is being financed by the Government of Seychelles under the Development Grant for Public Enterprises, with delivery of the buses expected during the first quarter of 2026.

The introduction of the two electric buses marks the beginning of a larger Electric Mobility Project under SPTC, which seeks to reduce carbon emissions and strengthen Seychelles’ transition towards cleaner, more sustainable public transport. These buses will initially operate on a pilot basis, providing valuable insights and experience for the scaling up of electric mobility in the country.

This acquisition is also part of SPTC’s broader strategy to modernise Seychelles’ transport

infrastructure, offering services that are energy-efficient, environmentally sustainable, and more comfortable for passengers, while maintaining the ticket prices for the public. It aligns with Seychelles’ national and global commitments to decarbonization and the improvement of public transport systems.

The Minister for Transport, Mr Antony Derjacques, welcomed this milestone, stating, “At government level, we are deeply encouraged by this development, which demonstrates our commitment to improving mobility services for our people while also addressing climate change. These new buses, including the introduction of electric vehicles into our public transport system, show that Seychelles is serious about embracing innovation, sustainability, and resilience. This is not just an investment in buses — it is an investment in the future of our nation’s transport and in the quality of life of our citizens.”

The Chairman of SPTC, Mr Andy Moncherry, affirms that this new acquisition is a testament to the evolution of the company while serving SPTC’s mandate fully.

The Ministry of Transport and SPTC reaffirm their commitment to improving the quality, reliability, and sustainability of public mobility services for the benefit of all Seychellois.
