On Friday, September 26th, Rohit Rathish, the newly appointed High Commissioner of India to Seychelles, conducted a formal courtesy call on Minister for Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment, Flavien Joubert, at the Oliaji Trade Centre.
Minister Joubert extended his heartfelt congratulations to HC Rathish on his recent accreditation and expressed strong support for his success during his tenure in Seychelles. This crucial meeting allowed for in-depth discussions on key areas of mutual interest and cooperation, particularly focusing on agricultural development.
Minister Joubert passionately underscored the urgent need to enhance livestock and crop production in Seychelles. He emphasised the necessity for innovative solutions that empower farmers to increase yields amidst changing climate conditions, highlighting specialised sectors such as mushroom cultivation as critical opportunities for growth.
Moreover, the minister advocated for initiatives at the Seychelles Institute of Agriculture and Horticulture (SIAH) to provide both in-person and virtual lecture opportunities, aimed at inspiring and equipping young people for careers in agriculture.
The conversation also delved into pressing issues related to climate change and environmental sustainability. Minister Joubert reinforced the critical importance of advancing renewable energy initiatives and providing high-tech training for environmental officers. He welcomed collaborations that would enable scientists to develop tailored programmes, enhancing the technical skills of local officers in coastal protection, a matter of increasing urgency for Seychelles.
