The Universal Postal Union (UPU), a specialised agency of the United Nations, held its 28th UPU Congress in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where elections were conducted on Thursday, 18th September, for the principal organs that govern the UPU.
In these elections, 192-member states cast their votes to determine leadership roles in the governance of the international postal system, with Seychelles being elected to both the Council of Administration (CA) and the Postal Operations Council (POC. Seychelles will serve a term a four-year term beginning in January 2026.
Seychelles’ election, secured from among 15 African Countries, marks a significant achievement for Seychellois diplomacy. It reflects the international community’s confidence in the country’s ability to contribute meaningfully to the development of the global postal sector, while underscoring the country’s strong standing in international fora.
As a member of both the CA and the POC, Seychelles, through the Seychelles Postal Services (SPS), will have a strong voice and key role in decision-making, whilst presenting the unique perspectives of small island states.
Headquartered in Bern, Switzerland, the UPU coordinates postal policies among member states and is the postal sector’s primary forum for international cooperation.
