Interschool athletics championship athletes to be better equipped this year

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Education, Patricia Saminadin, told the media in a joint interview with the Ministry of Health today that they are placing a lot of importance on the health of those students participating in this year’s interschool athletics championship. She said that they have been working with the physical education teachers in the schools to ensure different aspects of the well-being of the young athletes, from rehydration to what they wear to compete in.

“We have also been insisting that the athletes warm up and stretch properly before they compete to avoid injury. “

She added that an aspect which is often overlooked is the post-competition period.

“Very often, we see children letting themselves go and lying down on the tracks after competing. This year we have designated an area within Stad Linite, specifically for them to warm up before competing and to cool down afterwards, as there are also specific exercises for that as well.”

She spoke about how the ministry has emphasised the necessity for the athletes to be mentally prepared, as often many freeze on the day because they cannot take the pressure of competing before a big crowd of spectators.

“We have emphasised that the wholesome wellbeing of each athlete is important, not just the physical side, but also the emotional aspect. We need to encourage them so that they can face that level of competition.”

The right attire is also something which the ministry has addressed this year.

“We are expecting that the athletes will not be getting blisters during the competition this year, as we are providing running shoes for the secondary and professional centres categories, whereas the athletes from the primary schools will run in their socks”

Ms Saminadin said they do not expect anyone to lack the spike running shoes as the ministry is providing these free of charge to the athletes.
