Two men were arrested during a targeted police operation conducted overnight from Thursday to Friday last week in Quincy Village, according to an official statement issued by the Seychelles Police Department.
The suspects, a 34-year-old man from Ma Joie and a 26-year-old resident of Quincy Village, were apprehended as part of an ongoing investigation into serious offences related to human trafficking with intent to exploit, as well as a conspiracy to import a controlled substance into the country.
The two suspects appeared before the Supreme Court, where the prosecution invoked Section 101 of the Penal Code, which allows for extended detention in complex or serious cases. The judge granted the request and ordered that the two individuals be held in police custody for 14 days to allow the investigation to continue.
According to initial reports, the investigation remains active, and further arrests have not been ruled out. Authorities remain cautious regarding the details of the case, citing the sensitive nature of the charges and the need for a thorough inquiry.
The Police Department reiterated its commitment to fighting all forms of organized crime, particularly human trafficking and drug trafficking, which continue to pose growing threats to Seychellois society.
“We take these matters very seriously and will continue our efforts to protect citizens from criminal networks, while working in partnership with our national and international counterparts,” a police spokesperson said.
The two suspects are expected to reappear before the court at the end of their initial detention period.
