IT is with profound sadness that The Seychelles Independent pays tribute to Joe Samy, an iconic figure in
Seychellois culture, who passed away in late May 2025. His passing marks the end of a major chapter in the artistic
history of Seychelles, a chapter written with passion, talent, and unwavering love for his homeland.
Joe Samy was not just an artist. He was a voice of the Seychellois soul, a builder of cultural identity, and a bridge
between generations. Through his songs, television productions, and educational commitments, he embodied the
very spirit of Seychelles: pride, resilience, and natural and human beauty.
“Seychelles has lost one of its most iconic and gifted sons,” declared President Wavel Ramkalawan in a heartfelt
message. “Joe Samy's extraordinary contribution to the cultural and artistic development of our nation will forever
be remembered and cherished.”
His signature work, “Mon Pei Byenneme”, remains etched in the hearts of all. It transcended time and opinion to
become a popular anthem of unity and patriotic love. With pieces like “La Digue” and “Victoria”, he created sonic
landscapes of Seychelles in a masterful way of telling our story through music.
In 2023, the Seychellois government awarded him the Republic of Seychelles Medal of Merit, and the French
government named him Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Two well-deserved honours that reflect his
enduring impact on the national and regional cultural scene.
But Joe Samy was also a mentor and educator. He contributed to artistic education, led audiovisual projects, and
supported young talents, always with the same commitment to excellence and the humility that defined him. He
believed that culture was not a mere showcase, but a tool for the future, a means of self-understanding.
As flags fly at half-mast and radios echo his most cherished compositions, we at The Seychelles Independent
wish to go beyond a simple farewell. We want to celebrate a legacy, to remind younger generations that Joe Samy
was not only an artist but a visionary patriot, a cultural guide, a faithful mirror of the Creole soul.
In schools, in studios, in homes, in hearts, Joe Samy lives on. His music will continue to teach, unite, and move
us. And for those who question the power of culture as a nation's foundation, his work offers a clear and luminous
answer.
Rest in peace, Joe Samy. Your island loves you and will never forget you.
